5 Home Maintenance Tips for the Fall

Tip # 1:  Clean Gutters

Cleaning out the gutters can be a dirty and annoying task, but imagine if you left it over the winter and when spring comes and you have water over flowing from the eaves trough because it’s clogged with ice chunks, leaves and other debris which can create all kinds of other issues. As unpleasant and inconvenient of a task this is it would be in your best interest to clean these out once the leaves have fallen.

Tip # 2:  Use your lawn mower with a bag to collect leaves instead of raking them up.
Raking up the leaves in the front yard can be labor intensive especially if you constantly have to bend over to pick up the leaves and place them into a bag resulting in a sore back, but if you use your lawn mower it mulches the leaves up into the lawn mower bag and if you do not have a bag for your lawn mower you can still use it to mulch up leaves.  Mulched leaves are hardly noticeable in the grass so you can probably get away with just mulching the leaves up and its great fertilizer!

Tip # 3:  Inspect your roof Before the Snow falls
Go up on your roof yourself or hire someone and inspect your roof thoroughly to spot any loose shingles, holes, inspect roof vents and caulk as needed.  A leaking point in your roof would be much better to find in the fall than in the winter months during a blizzard or in the spring when the snow begins to melt on the roof and you have water leaking into your home creating all kinds of unplanned issues.

Tip # 4:  Inspect Window trim for leaks
To avoid having the heat escape from your house and drive your power bill up use a screw driver or something narrow and probe around the trim on the windows and doors around your house. If you find any gaps, seal it up with some caulking to keep that heat inside for the winter.

Tip # 5:  Inspect Your Heating System
If you are capable checking this yourself then do it, if not hire a professional to come and take a look and make sure your heating system is working properly.  Annual maintenance of your heating system can prevent surprises where you discover the furnace is not working properly on a freezing cold night in winter when it’s almost impossible to find help to fix it in a hurry.

Enjoy the fall months everybody!
