An ATV or All-Terrain Vehicle is a self-propelled vehicle that is designed for off-road use and includes vehicles such as mini-bikes, dirt bikes, all-terrain cycles, quads and off-road utility terrain vehicles.
In Saskatchewan, a person must be at least 16 years of age and hold a valid driver’s licence to operate an ATV in any public area. NOTE: Youth between the ages of 12 and 15 can operate an ATV in public areas and may cross roads if they have passed an approved ATV training course and are supervised by someone who has held a driver’s licence continuously for the preceding 365 days.
In Saskatchewan ATVs cannot be registered but must be insured with at least a minimum of $200,000 liability before it can be operated in public areas. Lots of people think that since the ATV isn’t require to be registered it is automatically included as part of their contents on their home insurance. This is not the case as most motorized vehicles are excluded under home insurance policies.
How you can choose to insure your ATV.
1. You can add it on to your home, tenant or farm policy. In this method, it is scheduled onto your insurance policy as a rider with All Risk and Liability coverage. You get to choose the value and deductible. **Caution, if you have a claim on the ATV, it will affect your entire policy (in most cases).
2. With certain companies, ATVs are treated as a vehicle even though they cannot be registered in Saskatchewan. These companies will not insure an ATV by itself on an Auto Policy, but will if you have a supporting vehicle (car, truck or SUV already on it) and add the ATV as a second vehicle on the policy. There are many options for coverage, deductibles and liability. Price is based on the Actual Cash Value and on driving history. In this instance, if you have a claim it will affect only the vehicle on your policy and not the entire policy like it would with your home policy.
3. Lastly, there are options to have the ATV on a policy by itself. There are a variety of options for coverage type, deductible and liability; they offer a Replacement Cost coverage as opposed to Actual Cash Value. This policy is based on driving history, claims, convictions, value and may vary depending on the age of an individual. **Caution, if the ATV is over 10 days old it will require an inspection prior to coverage being provided.
