Insurance Myths Busted “I want to deal with the conglomerates because they have teams of lawyers ready to help me.”
Do they make mistakes so often that it’s worthwhile for them to have a team of lawyers on their staff? There’s no team and they’re probably not on the staff of the brokerage. It’s more likely they have a guy from a big law firm in Toronto or Vancouver (or out of the US). That isn’t much good to you under Saskatchewan or Alberta law. Civil Law, like insurance, is provincially regulated. Their experts have to have the expertise and experience in the jurisdiction they’re in. Any lawyer from Saskatchewan would have to engage another lawyer in another province to assist with litigation there, so are you not further ahead with a law firm from the jurisdiction the dispute is in? Further, larger insurance companies actually do have large legal departments that will work to minimize your loss while simultaneously working to get you back in business. If your insurance was written correctly in the first place, then the longer you’re out, the more they pay. Generally speaking, clients are further ahead cost and results-wise going this way.
